RADAR-CNS at NIHR MindTech HTC Mental Health Symposium

Event December 8th 2017, 01:00

On the 7 December 2017, Post-Doctoral Research Associate, Sara Simblett, from RADAR-CNS partner King’s College London presented a poster at the NIHR MindTech HTC Mental Health Symposium 2017, focusing on the topic of Digital Technology in Practice.

The poster summarised preliminary work conducted during the first year of the RADAR-CNS project, which aimed to put people who use healthcare services at the heart of our research activities. It outlines the results of a series of focus groups that were conducted across three European countries (Spain, Italy and the UK) and subject to a rigorous qualitative analysis.

Findings were extracted on possible barriers and facilitators to engagement with smartphone apps and wearable technology that will be used in the RADAR-CNS project to detect bio signatures of occurrence and reoccurrence of symptoms associated with epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and major depressive disorder. Research protocols were adapted following these focus groups in keeping with an ethos of co-production and service user involvement in design of research.

This year’s NIHR MindTech Healthcare Technology Co-operative (HTC) mental health symposium brought together leaders in clinical practice, patient experience, academic research, industry and technology development to address the key challenges in building a faster evidence-base to support implementation of new technologies in mental healthcare. There were international speakers on taking digital technologies into NHS Practice, providing evidence and commissioning for digital mental health resources and debates about new horizons including machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Chris Hollis, Professor of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Nottingham and Director of the NIHR MindTech Healthcare Technology Co-operative, said, 'Since 2013, the MindTech national symposium has presented cutting edge research and service-user involvement in digital technology for mental health and wellbeing. RADAR-CNS has figured prominently in the proceedings over the last two years and it was great to have an update on the most recent work being carried out by the consortium at the #MindTech2017 event. The work undertaken by the RADAR-CNS patient involvement work package demonstrates the commitment of the consortium to work with potential users of the system, ensuring that a user-centred approach underpins decision making and development of the RADAR-CNS platform.'

It was a stimulating day, packed with exciting cutting edge research pertinent to the aims and endeavours of the RADAR-CNS project. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you like to learn more about our results presented as part of this day.
